Hancock Marine Services Ltd is almost certainly the largest specialist cleaning, valeting and re-proofing company handling work for the marine trade. Handling thousands of sails and covers the whole year round, through a network of agents, many of which are sailmakers.
Reception
Each item is carefully labelled and weighed on arrival. All our agents have a unique identifying letter. When you send in an item, we fix a label with this letter plus a serial to the item and bag if it has one. This ensures no item is lost or incorrectly bagged.

Selection and cleaning
All items are removed from their bags and sorted out for one of our three washing techniques, depending on the age, condition and type of material. Laminated or composite sails are laid out on protective sheeting and cleaned using state of the art pressure washers. Woven sails are either flat washed, as with laminated sails, or washed under complete supervision in a large single pocket washing machine. A variety of soap powders are used to care for different fabrics.
Spot clean
Whether washed or flat cleaned ALL sails are laid out and carefully inspected prior to hanging up to dry. Any remaining stains receive further treatment with the pressure washers.
Drying
Items are hung in purpose built drying rooms big enough to accommodate up to 180 sails at any one time. Large fans in the roof help to circulate warm air heating, which ensures perfect and complete drying.
